Meet a Westsider:
Lola ‘Skipper’ Byram
Retired bookkeeper and arts and crafts teacher; also worked at Rick’s Nursery for years. I have been teaching “Range of Motion” classes to “special needs” people as a volunteer for over
20 years (and I love it) at Manitou Springs swimming pool.
What I like most about the Westside is... the warm and friendly people. I rarely hear angry voices.
If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... the building on every vacant lot.
A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “Ratatouille.” Friends brought it at Christmas and I found it charming.
The worst advice I’ve ever gotten was... never date a military man. I not only dated one but we had celebrated our 55th anniversary before he passed away.
If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... Maya Angelou.
The next time I travel, I’m going to... either Hawaii or Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
My favorite childhood memory is... visits with my maternal grandmother in Merna, Nebraska. I loved walking through the garden, salt shaker in hand, sampling the tomatoes.
My favorite spring pastime is... seeing the birds return to the area and the flowers breaking through the snow. I’ve seen daffodils in our church planter already and the crocuses should be coming out soon.
Something good I’ve read is.. “For One More Day,” by Mitch Albom. I also read and like, “Tuesdays with Morrie,” also by Albom.
My pet peeve is... people that litter. I often wish every scrap of paper, every cigarette butt, etc., would return en masse to the person that dropped them.
If I won the lottery, I’d... take a family of friends to Hawaii, just as I promised 20-some years ago. I suppose it would help to buy a ticket.
