What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the lead concierge at Brookdale Village at Skyline, an active retirement community for seniors.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I’m a “keeper of the gate” of sorts, getting folks to and from different parts of the buildings and to different de-partments when appropriate. Tasks I carry out include answering the switchboard and directing those calls, receiving guests and people with appointments for directors and marketing. Sometimes this all seems to happen at once, but that makes for a fun day to see if you can handle the craziness without anyone noticing, Best of all is being available for the residents and responding to their numerous questions and needs.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
Customer service-related work has been a major part of my career years – 28 of them on the Westside, the last 7 (and the most rewarding) at the Village at Skyline.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
To be affirmed and loved by so many residents, their families and my co-workers every day. I can’t ask for more than that.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
I would like to never have to say good-bye to residents or their families… Other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I have learned that it isn’t about me, and that real contentment comes with the “serving,” not being “served.” It is my daily pleasure to do that for these wonderful people in our community.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I am a nester by nature, and I feel all nestled in when I come to work and so do our residents because of our special Westside location in the foothills, near Cheyenne Mountain and the national forest.
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
