What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I am the director of operations at Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I do the initial interviews of the 100 volunteers, manage between 35-65 employees (depending on the season). I also go to the National Tourism Association Convention to help bring business here. Overall, my job is to make sure everything runs smoothly, that we offer the best possible customer service to our guests, and that we fulfill our mission, which is to provide education to the public and a continuous stream of revenue for the park.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I’ve been doing this for 10 years, all here on the Westside. I worked here previously as program coordinator for all the educational opportunities offered.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
It has a lot of variety, I get to work with people all day long. What excites me most is the mission. We’ve given more than $1.2 million for the preservation of the park.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
If I had a magic wand... I’d like to have 10 qualified cooks. That way, I’d have back-ups for emergencies and vacations.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
I went to Bible College, received my B.A. and then worked for Young Life for awhile. It’s similar in people skills – however, I was not prepared to run a cafe. It was run by vendors for a couple of years, and then we decided to run it ourselves.
What makes working on the Westside special?
I love all the natural beauty that is on the Westside: Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon, Pikes Peak & Red Mountain and also the diverse architecture and people. If I could, I would live on the Westside.
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
