What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I work part-time at Use Again Building Materials, a family-owned retail business. Gosh, I never thought about myself having a title, I guess I’m Rick’s mom. After that, I’m mostly a part-time volunteer.
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I’m a greeter, inventory locater and cashier.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
My former husband and I opened Use Again Building Materials in August 1991. That’s almost 22 years of recycling building materials. My son Rick bought the business about 8 years ago. He had been managing it for us for almost 19 years. My family came to Colorado Springs in 1944. My dad built our first home on Columbia Road. He built at least half a dozen more homes up and down Columbia Road over the next 12 years. We kids knew how to drive nails, climb rocks and play.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
I like meeting folks. Seeing old friends and making new ones is such a pleasure that I don’t think that much about quitting time.
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
That folks would recycle more.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
That I would get my hands dirty from time to time.
What makes working on the Westside special?
There’s a placard facing westbound traffic on the east side of I-25 at Colorado Avenue that says, “Welcome to Historic Old Colorado City.” I smile and some delightful image pops into my memory. I’m home. I still feel safe here, as I did as a kid. I enjoy working at Use Again, patronizing other locally owned businesses or just walking, shopping and partying (mostly eating) with my family and West Junior girl friends that I grew up with (most of whom still live on the Westside). I love the diversity yet harmony that I find is unique to the Westside community.
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
