What do you do?
Where do you work and what is your title?
I'm the owner of the women's fitness facility, Curves. I currently have two clubs – on Centennial Boulevard. and on Dublin Boulevard (with a co-owner).
What do you do there and/or what are you responsible for?
I do a little bit of everything, including implementing new programs (such as Zumba), teaching weight loss and hiring qualified circuit coaches. Most importantly, I work to provide a safe, clean environment for women to reach their fitness goals.
How long have you been doing this kind of work (total)? How long on the Westside?
I opened my first Curves 10 years ago on Garden of the Gods and moved to Centennial Boulevard 2 years ago – at one point I owned four clubs.
What do you like best about it (other than quitting time)?
Members tell me all the time how much Curves has changed their lives. I get unsolicited testimonials about amazing improvements to their health. It's great!
If you could change one thing (other than pay), what would it be?
There's always a desire to reach more women and to find ways to inspire them to walk through our front door.
What part of your work did your training/education never prepare you for?
Having owned a small business before, I knew the ins and outs of running a business. It's not easy being a small-business owner. You should have a passion for what you do because there will be challenges. For example, dealing with landlords can be difficult when your plumbing gets jammed or your air conditioning stops working. As a business owner, you never get to “punch out.’
What makes working on the Westside special?
I love the Westside! I've lived here for most of the 35 years I've been in the Springs. We have such an eclectic group of members. These are women who own businesses themselves, participate in civic and cultural activities and have raised families. Curves provides a venue for us to contribute to many charities, including the Heart Association, One Nation Walking Together, Susan G. Komen and more. These are my kind of people!
“What do you do?” is a regular feature in the Westside Pioneer. If you know someone who has an interesting job on the Westside (but doesn’t live here), he/she might be a candidate for this column! If you know someone who might qualify, give us a call at 471-6776.
