2 community-spirit activities together at Jackson Feb. 14
A chance to give blood as well as to shop at a bake sale raising money for a local fire victim will be offered at Jackson Elementary Tuesday, Feb. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Both activities will go on simultaneously in a portable coach that will be parked in front of the school that day. Jackson is at 340 Edwinstowe Ave. in Holland Park.
The blood drive will be in association with Mended Little Hearts of Colorado Springs, working with the Penrose/St. Francis Blood Bank. Volunteer donors are welcome.
The bake sale will offer food made and volunteered by Jackson staff and parents. The recipient of the proceeds will be Tom Sabino, whose son Tyler was in fourth grade at Jackson in January 2011 when fire engulfed a home they shared with extended family on Chesham Circle and burned them both seriously. According to Debbie Hankins of Jackson, Tom is flying to California to see Tyler, who had been getting treatment at the Shriners hospital in Sacramento, Calif., before recently being moved to another hospital in that area because of complications.
Tyler's former classmates, now in fifth grade, brainstormed the bake sale idea, Hankins said. A good Samaritan in the community donated a plane ticket to Tom (who still has not recovered enough to return to work). The goal of the fundraiser is to help Tom with other expenses on the trip.
Since the fire, the Sabino extended family has moved away from the Westside, although Tyler's younger sister still attends Jackson (first grade) on a permit.
