14th annual event spotlighting bighorns at Garden of the Gods Visitor Center Feb. 9
The Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center will again honor the official state animal of Colorado with the 14th annual Bighorn Sheep Day at the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center Saturday, Feb. 9.
The time range will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is at 1805 N. 30th St.
Admission and all activites are free.
Included will be crafts, games, hourly guided walks, four scheduled presentations and chances to view bighorns through telescopes at the center as well as the Mesa Road overlook.
Coordinated by City Parks and the Visitor Center with other outdoor-related entities and nonprofits, the annual event spotlights the roughly 70 Rampart Herd bighorns who live in the mountainous terrain north of the Garden.
Here is a list of the presentations:
· 10:30 a.m., “Interactive Bighorn Survival Game” (for ages 6-plus and adults).
· 11:45 a.m., “Bighorn Sheep of the Garden of the Gods.”
· 1 p.m., Small animals brought in by staff from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
· 2:15 p.m., “Rampart Range Bighorns (Our Local Herd).” Also contributing to the event are Visit Colorado Springs, Colorado Parks & Wildlife, Bear Creek Nature Center, National Forest Service (Smokey the Bear), Rocky Mountain Field Institute, Garden of the Gods Foundation, FOGG (Friends of Garden of the Gods) and City of Colorado Springs Cultural Services.
Overflow parking will be available in the Rock Ledge Ranch parking lot on the other side of 30th Street.
