Meet a Westsider:
Phil Byrne

Profession/Occupation... musician and guitar instructor.

What I like most about the Westside is... The hometown feel of the place. The neat little shops and restaurants. Going to places like Meadow Muffins and listening to great players and good friends Mike Nelson and Michael Reese perform.

If I could change anything about the Westside, it would be... I wish there were more establishments that played jazz and blues on a regular basis. Also, the construction of new buildings off Mesa Road and the continuation of Friendship Lane. There is already too much traffic going through Mesa.

A good movie I’ve seen recently is... “The Dark Knight.” Heath Ledger did a superb job playing the Joker. That laugh was perfect.

I'd like to discover... Since I love history maybe some new caves containing old artifacts.

If I could meet someone famous, I’d like to meet... I would love to meet some old musicians, some deceased (John Coltrane and Frank Zappa) and some not (Pat Martino).

The next time I travel, I’m going to... Denmark. I especially enjoyed Copenhagen when I was there six years ago. There is a lot of incredible history. The castles in that country are amazing

My favorite childhood memory is... visiting Colorado as a little boy. Seeing the mountains. Hiking around Colorado and the Pikes Peak area.

My favorite winter pastime is... I like the summer just to be outside enjoying the weather and outdoor events. In the winter I enjoy relaxing by the fireplace practicing my guitar and writing.

Something good I’ve read is.. I enjoy reading articles in “Premier Guitar,” magazine by musicians that have influenced many of us musicians.

My pet peeve is... the constant construction that takes away from this beautiful city.

If I didn’t have to work for a year I would... travel in Europe, get more guitar practice in and build a great music studio.
