Fillmore corridor project meeting Jan. 10

A public meeting on the Fillmore corridor project is scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the El Paso County Citizens Service Center, 1675 W. Garden of the Gods Road.
Hosted by officials with the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (RTA) and the project consultant, URS Corp., the event will include updated exhibits since the last meeting in August. The idea is to take fresh public comment before escalating the plan from the preliminary to the final design stage.
According to Lesley Mace of the RTA, the meeting will be in Room 1019 on the first floor of the Service Center. Parking is available in a multi-level garage just west of the center. Signs will direct people to the center's entrance.
The meeting will feature different stations, manned by representatives from RTA or URS, explaining different aspects of the project using maps, videos or other graphics. This should allow people to get answers more easily than in a large meeting format, Mace said.
“They will be able to choose the station that matches their interest and discuss their concerns/input directly with the staff,” she explained, which will allow representatives to “spend as much time as possible with each person.”
As planned, the project will feature a westerly realignment of Chestnut Street (including Parker Street becoming a cul-de-sac), with the intent of unclogging the intersection at Fillmore Street and I-25. Construction is expected to start in the fall.
