Information night Jan. 19 for West Middle School's Gifted Magnet program

An information meeting for District 11's Gifted Magnet program for grades 6-8 will be offered at West Middle School, 1920 W. Pikes Peak Ave., Thursday, Jan. 19 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Parents/guardians of future or present middle-schoolers in the Pikes Peak region are welcome to attend. Teachers in the program will host the event.
The program is predominantly open to students who have been identified as “gifted and talented” through a testing process using state criteria. However, another 10 percent or so can also qualify if they have shown high achievement, explained Hillary Charles of the D-11 Gifted & Talented Department. Opportunities can be provided in various disciplines, including music, arts or sports, she said.
“The Gifted Magnet Program curriculum is interdisciplinary and built around the concepts of discovery, change and conflict,” an event flyer states. “The curriculum is highly rigorous, exceeds state content standards and requires depth and complexity of thought.”
A similar session at Sabin, D-11's other Gifted Magnet middle school, will be Jan. 17.
Applications are available at either school or online at d11.org.
